Arthur James Vogan was born in Kent, England in 1859 and travelled to New Zealand in 1880. He arrived in N.S.W. ca. 1885 and was included as an artist in the 1885 Royal Geographical Society's 'Bonito' expedition to the Fly River area in British New Guinea.
