John Herbert Butler, stockman of Bondi, NSW was born in Hobart, Tasmania. He enlisted in the 2nd Australian Light Horse at the age of 20, Aug. 1914. He embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on Transport A15 Star of England, 24 Sept. 1914 and served in Egypt.
