Another portrait of Sydney, attributed to Stuart, is at DG 191, and shows Sydney as a young man.

A version of this portrait was issued as a mezzotint as "Lord Viscount Sydney". The plate, engraved by John Young, was inscribed "From the original picture painted by G. Stuart.": see P3/S.

Object History

The painting had been acquired by Walter Jennings, the father of the vendor in New York in 1916. The painting had remained in the Townshend family until 1890, when it passed to collateral descendants, who sold it in 1915.
