General note

Two handwritten insertions before p. 1: index of merchant ships in vol. 3; notes about merchant ships in vol. 3 left by Mr J. Clare, 18 August 1956.

Royal yacht HMS Ophir (steamship) on p. 3 brought the Duke and Duchess of York to Australia for the opening of Federal Parliament.

Avenger (steamship) on p. 66 was being built in England when 1914-1918 war started. For Canadian-Australian service, was to be named 'Aotearoa' but taken up by the Royal Navy and used as an armed merchant cruiser and torpedoed and sunk 14 June 1917 - note by J. Clare, 1956....
