General note

Little is known about Hirst. It is said he was an itinerant painter, possibly because of his somewhat naive style. He seems to have mainly painted house portraits, other examples of Brisbane and Ipswich residences are held by the State Library of Queensland and the National Library of Australia respectively. Both of these appear to be 1880s works....

Administrative / Biographical history

James March immigrated to Australia with his family on board the `Herefordshire' in 1857, when aged 40. In The Official post office directory of New South Wales (Bailliere's) 1867, March is listed as a carpenter; a trade he continued for many years at Emu Plains.
