Twenty four page diary in Archibald Bell's hand, providing a daily record of his first attempt to find a new road over the Blue Mountains, 1-5 August 1823. And an account, written retrospectively, of his second and successful excursion for the same purpose begun on 1 September 1823.

Archibald Bell (1804-1883) was an Australian explorer and politician. In 1823, at the age of nineteen, Bell crossed the mountains along what was to become Bell's Line of Road. He used the knowledge of the local Aborigines (Darug people) and although the mountains had been crossed at Katoomba a decade earlier, there was still no satisfactory route...
