John Helder Wedge, 1793-1872, born in Cambridge, obtained an appointment as assistant surveyor in Van Diemen's Land, and arrived there in 1824. He crossed to Port Phillip with John Batman and surveyed the 500,000 acres acquired by Batman's Port Phillip Association, and played an important part in the founding of Melbourne.
