Notes

General note

The vendor suggested that artist is possibly Captain Otway whose work is known from the painting 'Native about to throw a spear at kangaroos' in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection (NK863) at the National Library of Australia. However stylistically this very competently executed painting is much closer to the work of Thomas Balcombe.

Signature / Inscriptions

Mr Nanhall, Vanhall, or Nauhall[?] inscribed in pencil on back of painting with framing instructions

Date note

Dated from blanket worn by one of the Aboriginal women
