The Society was founded in 1701 to promote the Christian religion in Britain's Foreign Plantations. It provided financial support to Anglican clergy and missionaries in Australia (from 1788), New Zealand (1840), Borneo (1848), Melanesia (1854), Straits Settlements (1861), Hawaii (1862) and Fiji (1880)
