William Henry Newton was born in Sydney in 1880. He was a merchant seaman on various voyages including the London to Sydney run from ca. 1895 to 1898 when he joined the NSW Department of Navigation, firstly as a seaman, and from 1908 to 1913 as an assistant lighthouse keeper at Seal Rocks, South Solitary Island and Norah Head.
