Dr Richard Hawley arrived in Australia from England on the "Thames" in 1862 and died in 1896 aged 72. He was employed as the Librarian & Assistant Secretary of the Australian Library and Literary Institution on 31 Dec 1865. In 1869 the Library became the Free Public Library, Bent St., Sydney.
