Administrative / Biographical history
During the convict era a chain of semaphore stations was set up on Tasman's Peninsula that relayed important messages between the penal settlement at Port Arthur and Hobart. Three lines of moveable arms attached to a mast could be extended at different angles to send numerically coded messages which were deciphered with the use of a code book.
