The enemy aliens interned were mainly German but also Austro-Hungarians, Italians and Japanese. There were three main groups - civilian internees shipped from Eastern ports, selected naturalised Australians and Australian born men of German descent, and prisoners of war captured in naval engagements or transferred from allied ports.
