Sir J. Dowling arrived in New South Wales in 1828 as a puisne judge of the Supreme Court and in 1837 was appointed Chief Justice, position of which he occupied until his death in 1844. His son, J.S. Dowling, was a judge of the District Court of New South Wales from 1858-1889.
